ASPEN, Colorado— The Aspen Music Festival and School (AMFS) returns for its 76th season this summer, presenting nearly 200 performances featuring world-class artists, faculty, and emerging musicians. Running from July 2 to August 24, the festival is themed “Concerning the Spiritual in Art,” exploring transcendence and introspection through music.

A highlight of the season is the world premiere of Siddhartha, She, a ritual music drama by composer Christopher Theofanidis and librettist Melissa Studdard, reimagining Hermann Hesse’s novel with a gender-swapped protagonist. Music Director Robert Spano conducts the performance, which features sopranos Caitlin Lynch and Maya Kherani, mezzo-sopranos Kelley O’Connor and Tamara Mumford, countertenor Key’mon Murrah, and baritone Nmon Ford.

Other major events include Renée Fleming’s directorial debut with Mozart’s Così fan tutte, staged in a 1980s high school setting, and the festival’s first complete concert performance of Handel’s Messiah, led by conductor Jane Glover. Mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard headlines the annual Opera Benefit and a solo recital, while bass-baritone Davóne Tines makes his festival debut with a program spanning J.S. Bach to Tyshawn Sorey.

The festival also celebrates the Pierre Boulez centennial with conductor David Robertson leading works by the late composer, including sur Incises and …explosante-fixe…. Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard makes his Aspen debut with solo recitals and a site-specific performance of Messiaen’s Catalogue d’oiseaux.

New music remains a festival focal point, with AMFS presenting world and U.S. premieres of works by Thomas Adès, Samuel Adams, Anna Clyne, Avner Dorman, Jasmine Barnes, Edgar Meyer, Tyshawn Sorey, and others. The Aspen Festival Orchestra and Aspen Chamber Symphony will showcase new commissions alongside classics from Wagner, Mozart, and Holst.

Performers include Lang Lang, Patti LuPone, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Sol Gabetta, Yefim Bronfman, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Gil Shaham, Alisa Weilerstein, and conductors Vasily Petrenko, Enrique Mazzola, and Xian Zhang.

As in past years, the festival unfolds in Aspen’s scenic setting, offering audiences a summer of artistic exploration and musical excellence.
