ATLANTA, Georgia— The Atlanta Opera Film Studio is set to premiere a new documentary chronicling the creative journey of five teams competing for the Antinori Grand Prize at The Atlanta Opera’s 96-Hour Opera Project. The documentary will air on Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) at 4 p.m. EDT on Sunday, August 4. It will also be available for streaming on GPB’s “Passport” site and The Atlanta Opera Film Studio’s streaming channel.
The 96-Hour Opera Project serves as a talent incubator and competition for composers and librettists from underrepresented backgrounds. Selected participants are paired to create mini-operas on a specific theme, mentored and judged by industry leaders, competing for a $10,000 grand prize.
For the 2024 competition, the teams collaborated with Oakland Cemetery and the Atlanta History Center to craft their operas around the untold stories of historic Black Atlantans interred at Oakland Cemetery. The documentary showcases the creation process, collaboration, performance, and awarding of the Antinori Grand Prize.
“The documentary celebrates the ethnic diversity of the competing artists and the stories of unsung heroes from Atlanta’s history,” said Tomer Zvulun, general & artistic director of The Atlanta Opera.
The documentary features interviews with notable figures, including Tomer Zvulun, Tinashe Kajese-Bolden, Mark Campbell, Doug Hooker, Priti Gandhi, Morris Robinson, Andrea Davis Pinkney, and Richard Harker. The creative teams include composers and librettists Edward Shilts, Laura Barati, Omar Najmi, Catherine Yu, Nathan Felix, Anita Gonzalez, Dave Ragland, Selda Sahin, Jorge Sosa, and Alejandra Martinez.
The documentary’s executive producers are Tomer Zvulun and Felipe Barral, with Cara Consilvio serving as director and writer. The Antinori Foundation, UPS, and The Rich Foundation sponsor the project and festival. For more information, visit stream.atlantaopera.org. ■
