DECATUR, Georgia— What began as a creative outlet during the COVID pandemic has evolved into a genre-defying musical experience that will take the stage at Eddie’s Attic on September 3 at 7 p.m. The Ridibund Chamber Music Society, a quintet formed by Atlanta Symphony Orchestra bassist and composer Michael Kurth, promises a night of playful musical fusion, blending classical elegance with rock, pop, and soul.
Kurth, joined by his Decatur neighbors—violinist Kirsten Browning, cellist Mary Horst, harpist Molly O’Roark, and drummer Ronnie MacDuff—started the group as a “porch band” with informal lawn performances to lift spirits during the pandemic lockdown. Now, they’re bringing their unique repertoire of “classical tunes bent popward, and pop tunes weirdened” to a live audience.
The setlist features bold reinterpretations of hits like Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog,” OutKast’s “Hey Ya,” and James Brown’s “I Feel Good,” alongside classical pieces like music by Erik Satie which the group cleverly mashes up with Nirvana. Their approach is at once reverent and irreverent, offering a fresh take on familiar music by blending genres in surprising ways.
The performance reflects Kurth’s vision of music as a boundaryless art form. “It’s a fun way to be creative outside of my ASO job,” he says. “We do some straight classical, some faithful covers of pop tunes, some mashups of both, and some really bent versions of both.”
For fans of classical music, rock, or simply those looking for an inventive night out, the Ridibund Chamber Music Society’s concert at Eddie’s Attic is set to be an unforgettable experience. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. For more info and tickets, visit eddiesattic.com ■
