MARIETTA, Georgia— St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church is set to kick off its 2024-2025 concert series with a performance by the Amadeus String Ensemble on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at 3 p.m. This concert, presented as part of the church’s Friends of Music ministry, aims to bring professional musicians to the local community, offering high-quality musical experiences that are both accessible and enriching.
The Amadeus String Ensemble, a well-established group in the Atlanta area for over 20 years, is led by Sou-Chun Su, acting principal second violin of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and will also feature violinist Sheela Iyengar Su, violist Zhenwei Shi, and cellist Charae Kreuger. The ensemble’s program for the opening concert will include two beloved works: Beethoven’s String Quartet Opus 18, No. 1 and Dvořák’s *String Quartet No. 12 in F*, popularly known as the American Quartet.
The series continues on Sunday, December 22, with a festive performance by Gate City Brass, an Atlanta-based brass quintet known for their lively interpretations of seasonal music. Their program will feature a collection of Christmas classics that capture the holiday spirit and offer a joyous celebration of the season.
In the new year, Ensemble Chaconne will take the stage on Sunday, January 26, 2025, with The Glorious Ones – Treasures by the Late Baroque Masters. The ensemble from Boston, Massachusetts, is comprised of Peter H. Bloom (baroque flute), Carol Lewis (viola da gamba), and Olav Chris Henriksen (baroque lute), will perform works by renowned composers such as J.S. Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Telemann. Their performance promises to transport the audience to the rich and ornate world of the late Baroque era with authentic period instruments and historically informed interpretations.
The concert series will conclude on Sunday, March 30, 2025, with a solemn and reflective Lenten Choral Evensong performed by the St. Catherine’s Choirs, joined by guest artists. This choral program, set in the tradition of evening prayers and hymns, will provide a contemplative end to the series, perfectly timed to coincide with the Lenten season.
All concerts are free and open to the public, with general seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. Donations will be accepted to support the Friends of Music ministry.
