HOUSTON, Texas— The Houston Symphony has announced the appointment of Gary Ginstling as its new Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective February 3, 2025. Ginstling, a seasoned leader with over 25 years of experience in orchestral management, will succeed John Mangum, who left the role in September 2024 to lead the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Ginstling will assume the Margaret Alkek Williams Chair, bringing a track record of innovation and strategic leadership at some of the nation’s leading orchestras. Most recently, he served as president and CEO of the New York Philharmonic, where he secured the largest endowment gift in the orchestra’s history. His previous roles include executive director of the National Symphony Orchestra and CEO of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

“Gary’s proven ability to expand audiences, secure transformative gifts, and foster cultural connections makes him the ideal choice to lead the Houston Symphony into its next chapter,” said Barbara J. Burger, president of the Houston Symphony Board of Trustees.

Music Director Juraj Valčuha expressed enthusiasm for Ginstling’s appointment. “Gary’s visionary leadership and passion for orchestral music align perfectly with our mission to inspire audiences and deepen our connection to the Houston community.”

Ginstling, who holds degrees from Yale University, The Juilliard School, and UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, will oversee the Symphony’s 130 annual concerts, a $40.7 million operating budget, and extensive educational and community outreach programs that reach over 160,000 people yearly. He will also spearhead efforts to complete the $60 million renovation of Jesse H. Jones Hall for the Performing Arts.

In a statement, Ginstling expressed his excitement about joining the Houston Symphony. “This is an orchestra with a rich history and boundless potential. I look forward to working with its talented musicians, dedicated staff, and generous patrons to define what a thriving 21st-century orchestra can achieve.”

Interim Executive Director Elizabeth S. Condic, who has been serving since September 2024, will return to her role as CFO and assist with the leadership transition.

Founded in 1913, the Grammy Award-winning Houston Symphony remains a cornerstone of the arts in Texas, known for its innovative programming, global reach through livestreaming, and commitment to community engagement and education.
