HOUSTON, Texas— The Houston Symphony has announced that Chief Financial Officer Elizabeth S. Condic will become its Interim Executive Director and CEO, effective October 2024. Condic will take over from John Mangum, who departs at the end of September to lead the Lyric Opera of Chicago as its General Director, President, and CEO.
Condic, who has served as CFO since joining the organization in November 2017, has played a critical role in helping the Symphony navigate financial and operational challenges, including those following Hurricane Harvey and during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was instrumental in developing the Symphony’s new strategic plan in 2024 and has gained a broad understanding of the organization’s operations and financials during her tenure.
As she steps into the interim leadership role, Condic will work closely with senior members of the Symphony’s administration, including Chief Operations Officer Vicky Dominguez, Senior Director of Marketing Alex Soares, Senior Directors of Development Christine Ann Stevens and Timothy Dillow, and Director of Education and Community Engagement Allison Conlan. The Symphony has initiated a nationwide search for a permanent Executive Director and CEO, with the Catherine French Group, a specialized executive search firm for the arts, leading the process. A search committee, chaired by former Board Chair Janet Clark, includes representatives from the Symphony’s board, staff, and musicians.
Condic brings over 20 years of experience as a CFO in the nonprofit and for-profit sectors. In her time at the Houston Symphony, she has overseen key areas such as Finance, human resources, and IT. She has worked closely with the Symphony’s finance and audit committees and the Houston Symphony Endowment Board and played a pivotal role in securing federal funding during the pandemic. Before joining the Symphony, Condic held leadership roles at the University of St. Thomas and the University of Mary, overseeing financial operations and large-scale construction projects.
Condic holds a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and a Master’s degree in Accounting from the University of Houston, Clear Lake, and is a Certified Public Accountant. ■
